How to Prevent Wasps from Building Nests

Each year, our patio and deck are besieged by unwelcome visitors of the stingy kind—wasps and yellow jackets.

Raid Wasp and Hornet Killer

My hubby is allergic to bee stings, so I’m the one who’s tasked with the job of killing the nest.
I use Raid Wasp and Hornet Killer because it shoots a thick stream of insecticide up to 22 feet, so I can stand well away from danger. It’s better to spray the nest with wasp killer just after dark, when there is less activity.

Discourage Wasps With A Wasp Nest Decoy

You can prevent wasps from building nests in the first place with this cheap, easy and effective solution I found on the Iowa natives Facebook site.

What You'll Need

  • A brown paper lunch bag
  • Twist tie
  • 2 plastic shopping bags
  • Fishing line or string

That’s all you need!

Stuff the shopping bags into the paper bag to give it some girth. Twist the end of the paper bag and secure it closed with a twist tie. Use the fishing line to secure it to a place in the area where you see the most wasp activity.

The idea is the wasps see the decoy nest as a bigger foe and will leave the area. It worked for me last year. The reason I needed Raid this time is because I didn’t put up my decoy nests in time. They’re up now.
